2024 Goals: Mid-Year Check-In

Hey everyone! We just passed the midway point of the year (which is a bit terrifying), so I decided that it was a good time to look back on my goals for the year and see how I’m doing!

Self-Publish Ghosts of the Steel Road

While I haven’t completed the self-publishing process just yet, I’m getting quite close. My current goal is to finish final edits for Ghosts of the Steel Road by the end of this month, so August is focused on book cover work and getting the final formatting and marketing preparation completed. Book is definitely still on track to get out on September 26, which is exciting and terrifying all at once.

Complete Two First Drafts

By some miracle, I’ve already finished this goal! At the end of March, I completed one draft at a little over 51k words, which is usual for my underwriting tendencies. But, in just two months, I wrote another first draft which has clocked in at over 72k words, which is a little intimidating for me. I’ve also got around 20k of a third first draft done, but that’ll likely be my last draft for the year before I focus on editing at least one of the projects I’m working on.

Maintain My Online Presence

And here is a goal that I’m definitely not keeping up with. While I’ve been decent on my blog, I still have not cracked the code to being consistently on social media. Instagram usually keeps lasting a week or two before I forget to post anything for a month, and I’ve definitely been better about showing my own stuff off on Tumblr, but not so good at finding others’ works to check out. Hopefully, with what should be a slightly more relaxed schedule this upcoming semester, I’ll be able to really show up on social media.

Take Better Care of Myself

Do I still have to learn how to rest? Yes, but for a mid-year check in, I’d say I’m doing a pretty good job at this goal. I’m eating good food, stretching (mostly), and even starting to work out. If things go well, I’ll even be running my first 5k this month! There’s still much more to do, but I’m proud of myself for putting myself first so far this year.

Take Time for Media

So far, I’ve been very on-and-off with this goal. I may have a week where I read, watch, and play a lot, and then forget any of that exists for a month. I’ve got some time this month due to just having my internship to contend with, but past that I’ll have to be sure to carve out time in my week for such things. Will be doing a bit of interesting reading for one of my classes too, which I’m counting just because I can.

Hang Out with People More

While I may have not been the best at this during the school year, I’m definitely doing a lot more socializing over this summer. I’ve gone to two Pride events, a club (yay for being 21), a hike, and I’ve hung out with my roommates a lot. It’s been fun, and I’ll definitely miss my internship area a bit when I leave in August, but hopefully this outgoing-ness will continue when I get back to campus.

A view of Colorado from South Boulder Peak. Some dead trees from a wildfire are still standing, but many are on the ground.

Be More Willing with Fashion

For this last goal, I’ve at least bought new clothing this year. A lot of it I couldn’t afford to be too experimental with, since it was for my internship, but there’s a little bit of a style change. Plus, I got the courage to buy some clothing from a pride collection, which is a huge step for me.

So far, I think I’ve done a pretty good job at finishing my goals for the year. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. But taking the time to go over my goals now has allowed me to know what to focus on for the rest of this year.
